The 17Th Ishara International Puppet Festival 2019
 

Let the celebrations begin! From Brazil to Italy, Iceland to Tunisia - the Ishara International Puppet Theatre Festival has once again travelled the world to curate its fantastic line-up for 2019! We celebrate our 17th anniversary with a diverse range of breathtaking performances, which communicate across language barriers & define the social, cultural & emotional bonds humanity shares together.

Alongside the best from India on display, performers from across the four continents have come together once again, to showcase a dazzling array of talent. From the traditional to modern forms of puppetry, ranging from rod to string puppets; to mixed performances with dance, theatre, music & more - we invite audiences of all ages to join us on this new magical journey.

From humble beginnings in 2001, the Ishara International Puppet Theatre Festival has now grown into one of Asia's largest & most prestigious puppet festivals. Graced by thousands of visitors each year, it has thrilled, moved & inspired audiences from India & across the world. The festival is nurtured & supported by the Ishara Puppet Theatre Trust, the country's leading established platform for Indian & International puppetry. For over thirty years, the trust has been the center for creative & innovative puppetry work, with a mission to educate, enrich, & transform communities.

Produced by Teamworks Arts: the festival's creative environment enables puppeteers, artists & performers to stretch their imagination & to deliver unforgettable & stunning performances. With tremendous acclaim & support from groups & performers across the world, the festival has brought to India over 150 international puppetry companies & promoted numerous indigenous productions. Countries which have participated & showcased their works include the UK, Spain, Turkey, Brazil, Sweden, Norway, Israel, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Taiwan, Japan, Iran, Afghanistan, Ireland, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Australia & USA.

India boasts a historical association with puppetry & the performing arts which magically dates back to 2nd century B.C - so it's fitting that the country is home to the festival. This year the 17th Ishara International Puppet Theatre Festival will take place from 1st February to 9th February 2019 at the Indian Habitat Centre in New Delhi & the Tagore Theatre, Chandigarh

This show has been inspired by the Orboro - the legendary snake that devours its own tail forming a circle. The evocative performance is a parable about the cyclical character of humanity's existence - life, death & rebirth. Shipwrecked & adrift, will one be devoured by the circling vultures or surrender himself to the deep of the sea? On a mysterious island, Mythological beings leave a strange egg, which invokes the curiosity of its inhabitants. What strange creature will arise, & does it cause the extinction of mankind? Intimate & dreamlike, this is a mystical experience that will captivate children & adults alike.

Extraordinary Voyage

We travel the high seas in a big white ship, & along the way meet our global neighbours the Arabs, the Spaniards, the Gypsies, the Mexicans & even Indians. Each place the ship visits is a new musical number, filled with big, colourful, imaginative puppets, dance, & foot tapping music from that part of the world. Learn about interesting places, their traditions & lots more! Utterly enchanting, this family treat of a show should leave you & yours wide-eyed with wonder.

The Legend of Lowry Lynch

Based on the legendary Irish myth, we travel back in time to a beautiful city which is ruled by the vain King Lowry Lynch. The King has his hair cut & styled only once a year, after which the poor barber is punished, lest he reveal a dark secret of the King. All the barbers have fled the city, except for one young fellow named Seamus. Will Seamus be able to save himself & make the King his friend? An innovative mix of sophisticated puppetry, colourful sets & happy musical interludes; we learn the important lesson of how to stand up to big bullies & the true meaning of friendship.

Be prepared to be gobsmacked by the astonishing & unbelievable finale in which multiple shadow puppets appear all at the same time - made with just two hands! Hilarious gags, sweet encounters with the audience & zany sound effects & music makes this a true family favourite for the ages.

The fisherman is trying to catch fish, but the cloud is following him everywhere & raining down on his head. Our hero decides he'll enjoy the rain & clown around playing his favourite games with wonderful bubbles of all shapes & sizes. Whatever will happen next, when the naughty cloud decides to join in the fun? Compounded generously withmusic & a riotous abundance of water gags & colourful bubbles - this marvellously clever show will have you smiling from ear to ear.

Determined to restore peace among all, the daring kids capture the beautiful apple & put it in inside a soldier's body, in place of his evil heart. Will the soldier stop fighting as he's now full of kindness? This engaging show works as a gentle reminder to the young & old alike, that's it important to spread kindness & love in this world & not fight among ourselves.

Whether it's India, UK or Afghanistan - a moustached gentleman wearing a bowler hat, baggy trousers & carrying a funny cane is an instantly recognizable figure in all cultures! The Afghani Charlie Chaplin gets a job in the zoo, & lands up in many humorous situations that will keep the audience perpetually in a state of uproarious mirth. Will our hapless hero learn how to take care of the naughty zoo animals, finish his chores on time and keep his job? Underneath the simple plot line of this rib-tickling, laugh-a-ton of a comedy show, there is clever wit & a fascinating lesson that teaches us that things are never as bad as it seems.
