Since its inception in 2001, the Ishara International Puppet Theatre Festival has brought to India over 90 international puppetry companies and promoted numerous indigenous productions. Alongside Indian talent, countries that have participated include USA, Brazil, Belgium, Afghanistan, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Taiwan, Japan, Sweden, Norway, Israel, Ireland, Iran.
Ishara has provided evocative and memorable entertainment and education for Indian audiences and attracts puppeteers and enthusiasts from all over the world. The festival produced by Teamwork Productions, focuses on both traditional and contemporary work from India and abroad and is seen as an established platform to further multimedia arts in India.
In 2013, the Festival is delighted to celebrate its 11th anniversary with a wide and exciting range of performances from across the world. The lineup is more vibrant and creative than ever before. The festival has modern and traditional forms, ranging from rod , string and shadow puppets; to mixed performances with dance, theatre, music and more.
The festival will take place from 8th -16th April 2013 at the Indian Habitat Centre in New Delhi, Epicentre Gurgaon, Club Patio Gurgaon and Tagore Theatre Chandigarh.

The popular folk legend of Russia, Sadko's story is retold here with musical splendor. A musician who’s lonely, one starry night takes his instrument and goes to play by the river. While he’s tracing the moon in the water, suddenly the King of the Sea appears & invites the astonished musician to play at his underwater palace. But how will he get there? And how will the musician get back? Watch this fantastic, music filled show to find out.

Meet Mr. Nonso and Miss Nonsa - two puppets grappling with their own funny problems and conflicts. Watch the silly twosome and their crazy attempts to try to find solutions & understand how everything in their world works. Like Charlie Chaplin and the silent movies of the early 1900s, the performance consists of short poetic sketches full of music, visual humor, comic timing and of course - explanatory signs!

Dhola Maru is a folk tale that originated in northwestern Rajasthan. This romantic legend of the separation of a young couple and their subsequent reunion was traditionally sung as a ballad, enacted as a nautanki drama and illustrated in numerous paintings. The current production is an adaptation of this story and it goes as follows. First time traditional puppet manipulation slow motion with story emotions effects.

Based on a traditional Bulgarian fairy tale, it’s a fun-filled family show with mischievous puppets. Our hero is a simple man who wants to find a good and caring girl to marry and chooses a rather strange but clever way to do it. With his trusty donkey, he goes from village to village, and offers girls nice fresh juicy plums in exchange for their house garbage.

Will the little girl manage to outwit the big bad bear and return home?

This coming of age tragedy explores themes of passion, sexuality, human nature, repression and freedom. Using puppetry, objects, dance, video projections and lighting, this wordless & colorful performance is a spectacular tribute to women everywhere & the freedom they rightly deserve in society.

The greatest Indian epic ever told – Ramayana is brought to life here through the magic of shadow puppetry. Teeming with powerful deities, magic weapons, demon armies, and divine love; we follow Rama, a god-turned-prince, on his quest to rescue his wife Sita after she is kidnapped by the multi-headed demon king Ravan. The show’s text is from
the 18th Century Odia poet Biswanath Khuntia’s “Bichitra Ramayan”, which is still very popular in the state of Odisha.

Interweaving puppets, actors, dance, visual images and music in a spellbinding poetic presentation, Ishara brings to life India’s greatest story of star-crossed lovers. Heer & Ranjha fall in love at first sight, but fate has something else in store for them. Heer is forced to marry another, and the two lovers later reunite with tragic consequences. Written in the 18th century by renounced Punjabi Sufi poet Waris Shah, there are many timeless themes about society & religion; hypocrisies and anomalies that remained unchanged even in today's modern Indian society.
